FAIRLEA- In what some consider to be a shocking development, longtime Greenbrier East Spartan volleyball coach Matt Sauvage has decided to resign from his position of leading young ladies on the court.
He officially told his players the new on Monday morning, April 7.
Sauvage, who also coached James Monroe boys’ basketball to two straight championships a couple years ago before giving that up permanently, racked up over 600 wins in 22 seasons with Greenbrier East and produced a plethora of all-conference, all-state, and college signees.
“I’m giving up volleyball at Greenbrier East,” Sauvage said.
“It was a such a tough decision, but it’s something I need to do.”
Admitting to shedding a tear or two during the decision-making process, Sauvage will now turn his entire focus to his church in Monroe County where he has been preaching full-time.
“For 22 years it’s been a big part of who I am as a person but it’s something I need to do,” Sauvage explained.
“Now that I’m preaching full time in Monroe County, kids are at a different age in life, and a few more things. It’s just time.”
His love for volleyball and his players, and their admiration right back for him, may keep him around the sport in some capacity which would obviously be great news for the program and the community.
“I still love volleyball and might still do some things with it like summer camps, private lessons, etc. But God is sending me on another path.”
The West Virginia Daily News would like to congratulate coach Sauvage on a fantastic coaching career and wish him the best of luck in his future.
