GREENBIER COUNTY W.Va. (WVDN) – On Thursday, Mya Monroy, a senior in Mrs. Dunkle’s agriculture education class, took home first place in the Prepared Public Speaking Contest after competing against students from four other schools in the region. The competition at Shady Spring High School challenged students to research, write, and present a speech on a significant agricultural topic. Monroy’s winning speech focused on climate change in agriculture, highlighting the challenges and adaptations farmers face in an evolving climate.
With this victory, Monroy has secured a spot in the West Virginia FFA State Prepared Public Speaking Contest, which will take place in July at Cedar Lakes. She will compete against the top speakers from across the state, further showcasing her ability to communicate complex agricultural issues effectively.
A dedicated member of the Greenbrier East FFA Chapter, Monroy has been actively involved in FFA throughout her high school career and previously served as an FFA officer. She has built an impressive résumé, excelling in FFA, HOSA, and other leadership events. Earlier this year, she won first place in the Veterinary Science competition through HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), demonstrating her deep understanding of animal care and medical procedures.
Monroy’s journey in FFA began as a freshman when she competed in the FFA Creed Speaking Contest. She won first place in the Southeastern Region and went on to place third at the state level, an impressive feat for a first-year member. Reflecting on her growth as a public speaker, Monroy shared:
“If you would have told me my freshman year, I would be an award-winning public speaker, I would have never believed you. I just wanted to make myself proud and have a sense of accomplishment knowing I did something not many people are able to do.”
Winning the Prepared Public Speaking Contest is another milestone in Monroy’s decorated high school career. Her ability to effectively research, articulate, and present complex agricultural issues sets her apart as a leader among her peers. As she prepares for the state competition at Cedar Lakes, Monroy continues to be a shining example of dedication and excellence in agricultural education and leadership.
Congratulations, Monroy, on your outstanding achievement, and best of luck at the state contest!
