CHARMCO – The regular season tune up is over. Postseason play began Friday in the Class A Region III girls basketball tournament. If Friday night was the barometer, put the rest of the region and top teams in the state on notice. Greenbrier West is for real and they’re on a mission. The Lady Cavaliers walloped Richwood 73-25 to cruise into the Region III Co-final this Wednesday night.

West wasted no time asserting its dominance in the first quarter. Brilee Redden spotted up and nailed three three-pointers in a 10-point quarter. Preslee Treadway chipped in with nine points and the Lady Cavaliers sealed the outcome by the end of the quarter. Maddie Fields doled out the assists to her teammates and scored four in the opening frame. Haylee Ward and Sam Holliday each added a basket. Richwood didn’t score until the 2:04 mark when Kailyn Rose knocked down a short jumper, but West was thoroughly in command with a 27-2 first quarter lead.

The Cavaliers downshifted in the second quarter and relented on the defensive pressure. Richwood still obliged by turning the ball over on numerous possessions and West balanced out the scoring with five points from Lacey Critchley, three points from Treadway, and a basket each from Kenna Fields and Gracie Rodes. The Cavaliers outscored Richwood 12-7 to take a 39-9 halftime advantage. Williams led the Ladyjacks with four points in the quarter.

The third quarter belonged to Maddie Fields. Fields pounded the boards and scored almost at will. Fields notched 12 points, mostly from short range. Her sister Kenna added a three-pointer as the Cavaliers got scoring from seven different players. Zaleigh Styer, Rodes, and Holliday each had two while Treadway and Ward each added a free throw. The Ladyjacks could only muster three points in the quarter, two from Alexxis Keiffer and a Williams Fouls shot. The Lady Cavaliers were out front by 50 points after three quarters.

Keiffer and teammates made a feisty run in the fourth quarter, but the outcome had not been in doubt since the first quarter. Keiffer contributed six points while Kyndra Rose, Sophie Mullins, and Emma Marlowe got in the scoring column. The West reserves did the remainder of the Cavalier scoring in the opening round win.

Maddie Fields led West with 16 points, Treadway added 13, and Redden tallied 10.

Greenbrier West will host the Greater Beckley Christian Crusaders on Wednesday, March 5 at 7 P.M. in the Region III Co-final. Greater Beckley defeated Mount View 43-40 on Friday night. The winner advances to Charleston to the girl’s state tournament. The Lady Cavaliers will be trying to make their second state tournament appearance in three seasons.
