John William Arbuckle
Mr. John William Arbuckle, of Lewisburg, finished his course on earth and entered into rest on January 30, 1925. He was the oldest member of the Lewisburg bar, having a record of fifty years of active practice. For many years he was Mayor of Lewisburg, and in 1888 he was elected to the State Senate.

Vess Fury, surrounded at his home near White Sulphur Springs by Federal prohibition officers, took a losing chance and jumped from a second story window in the hope of making an escape. Instead of getting away he was forced to lie waiting with a broken ankle bone until the officers arrested him.
Another Pistol Bill
Severe penalties are prescribed in a bill introduced in the House of Delegates by Delegate Wood Taylor of Roane County, regulating the possession, sale, and use of pistols and revolvers.

Beautifying Lewisburg
The members of the Greenbrier Garden Club, the Rotary Club, the Lions Club, and the Chamber of Commerce have formed a group to be known as the committee for Lewisburg roadside beautification. Eighty-nine trees, including pine, hemlock, maple, redbud and dogwood have already been planted.

GMS VS. VPI

Ford Will Send Congress 1st Budget, Large Deficit Seen
President Ford sends Congress the first budget of his administration today – a call for spending “almost $1 billion a day” in a fiscal blueprint bearing a whopping $52 billion deficit.

About 7 million Americans were estimated to be out of work in January, and President Ford’s chief economic adviser says several hundred thousand more could lose their jobs before the recession hits bottom.
Time To Tap The Sugar Maple
The time of year has arrived to get out the buckets and spiles and get the old evaporator ready. With the coming of warm days and cold night sap will start to flow in the Sugar Maple. Pocahontas County has many old sugar camps scattered around. Most of them have not been used for years. The potential is here for a profitable wintertime industry.

DEP Schedules Hearing On Asphalt Plant
An informational meeting will be held by the Division of Environmental Protection next week to address citizen concerns regarding a hot mix asphalt plant located outside Lewisburg. DEP’s Office of Air Quality has received requests from Lewisburg Mayor DeEtta King Hunter, the Lewisburg City Council and a number of local residents to hold the informational meeting.
Resort, Community College Announce New Partnership
In an effort to support continuing education and training among its employee base, The Greenbrier has announced a partnership with the Greenbrier Community College Center of Bluefield State College (GCCC). The Greenbrier actively supports the college’s associate degree program in lodging operations.
Quarry Permit Held Up By Appeals
An appeals board has granted a request to halt further action on a proposed expansion permit for a quarry at Slatyfork until appeals against it are heard. The Surface Mine Board release its 6-1 order granting a stay to Snowshoe Resort, Inc., Mountain Valley Coalition, and the P. Pendleton Kennedy Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
