CHARMCO – At this point of her career, Preslee Treadway is firmly etched into the record books at Greenbrier West. The senior forward is more focused on her second state championship of this, her senior year. Treadway was an all-tournament selection for the state champion volleyball team in December. She also happens to be one of the elite scorers in school history on the hardwood, surpassing the 1,000-point threshold in last year’s Region III co-final. For good measure, she also set the girl’s single game scoring record at Greenbrier West with 46 points in the same game.

The early part of the 2024-25 season has been a bit of a rollercoaster for the senior. Treadway began the season with three straight 20-plus-point nights, a great start to her season. With 27 points in an overtime win against Summit Christian, Treadway leapfrogged Sham Smith (1986-88) for fourth place on the girls’ all-time scoring list. Treadway then had to sit out a loss to Wahama in the Winter Classic at Summersville on December 27 while dealing with a health issue. Defying the odds or perhaps doing her best Willis Reed impersonation, Treadway returned on December 30 to help her team defeat Region III nemesis River View in the Winter Classic with 19 points. That scoring output was enough to squeak past Andy Manspile (1996-98) for third place on the girls’ all-time scoring list.

Treadway chips away at the list every night she plays. After a 13-point effort in a win over Meadow Bridge, Treadway poured in a season-high 29 points in a tough loss to James Monroe. The gritty senior forward amassed 28 points on the road in a second win over River View, leaving her two points shy of tying Kenley Posten (2017-20) for second place.

When the day started on Wednesday morning, the Lady Cavaliers were set to host Shady Spring. After Raleigh County Schools shut down the Tigers’ travel plans due to inclement weather, Cavalier Head coach Mark Agee went to work on finding a replacement. Oak Hill had been Greenbrier West’s scheduled opponent back on January 10, but the game was postponed due to the snow. Surprisingly, Fayette County Schools allowed the Red Devils to make the trip to Charmco and make up that earlier missed opportunity. Game on!

The Lady Cavaliers didn’t exactly set the nets on fire in the first quarter, though, and stumbled out to a rocky start. Treadway got the basket needed to tie Posten’s mark, but that would be her only bucket of the period. Fellow senior scoring stalwart Maddie Fields added West’s only other basket. Oak Hill’s Kasey Compton drilled a three-pointer on her way to five first quarter points. Ali Williams added four points and Oak Hill sprinted out to a 13-4 lead.

The scoring malaise continued for Greenbrier West in the second quarter. Treadway passed Posten with a free throw but mustered only two points on 2-6 foul shooting. Fields chipped in with four points, but the West scoring was non-existent beyond the two seniors. Oak Hill got threes from both Addy Isaacs and Danielle Parsons, with Isaacs scoring five in the frame. Williams added another Red Devil basket for a 22-10 halftime advantage.

The Greenbrier West offense remained in a funk for the third quarter. Brilee Redden got in the scoring column with three points on 1-2 foul shooting and a field goal. Treadway collected four points as did Sam Holliday. Oak Hill would not be outdone by West’s 11-point output. Taysa Gray and Parsons nailed three-pointers for the Red Devils, and Jada Wilburn added three points with a field goal and a free throw. Oak Hill outscored Greenbrier West 12-11 to take a 34-21 lead into the final frame.

Jordan Harris came off the bench to put up seven points for Oak Hill in the final quarter. The Red Devils did a lot of damage from the free throw line, knocking down 6-14 foul shots. Wilburn had five points to go along with four more points from Parsons. The Cavaliers tried to claw their way back into contention with nine points from Treadway. Redden helped the West cause with six points followed by five from Fields. Haylee Ward added West’s other score. Although the Cavaliers outscored Oak Hill 22-20, the Red Devils collected a 54-43 win.

Treadway finished her night leading all scorers with a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double. With 1,197 points, Treadway now trails only Gina Osborne (1985-87) on the girls’ all-time scoring list. Fields added 11 points and Redden chipped in with nine.

Greenbrier West (4-5) hosts Meadow Bridge on Tuesday, January 28. Before the game, the coaching staff will celebrate the team’s senior members at 7 P.M. Tip-time for varsity action is 7:30 P.M. Oak Hill hosts George Washington on Saturday, January 25 at 2 P.M.
