LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – Police were dispatched to the vicinity of Neat Hawk on Jan. 20 for shoplifting, according to a criminal complaint. The officers were reportedly told that there was a green Subaru outside the store waiting for the person who was shoplifting.
Upon arriving at the scene, the complaint says the officer approached the Subaru and spoke with the subject sitting inside. She advised she was waiting on her friend “DJ” who she had given a ride to. The second officer then went inside while the first officer continued to speak to the driver of the Subaru. The officer then asked the driver to walk inside with him and find DJ.
Upon entering the store, the second officer was already speaking to a male. The first officer then asked the driver if that was DJ and she said it was, the criminal complaint states. He was patted down to ensure the safety of the officers and an open pocket knife was reportedly found. Upon further pat down, a headlamp was located in his pocket out of the box but still in the plastic that holds it in the box.
At this time the male was identified as David Reed Canaday Jr., 35, of Beckley. With further questioning from the officers, he agreed to show them where he threw the headlamp box away. The officers were not able to locate the box, so they called for a manager. The manager was able to get together an invoice for the items Canaday was attempting to shoplift. The total was $168.58.
The subject was also run through the officers’ dispatch. According to the criminal complaint the officers were then advised that Canaday had several arrest warrants and two capiases. Canaday was then placed under arrest and patted down to take his belongings.
Three hydrocodone and some tin foil containing what appeared to be heroin was in a baggie they found on Canaday. Canaday was then transported to Lewisburg Police Department for processing, according to the criminal complaint.
Canaday is facing multiple charges in Greenbrier and Raleigh counties.
