Charleston, W.Va. (WVDN) —West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin issued a scathing critique of President Trump’s recent flurry of executive orders, which have overturned several initiatives enacted during the Biden administration. They said, “These actions, motivated solely by partisanship, have undermined critical programs that benefited millions of Americans, including senior citizens and cancer patients.”
Among the programs repealed by President Trump are:
- A flat $2 copay for all generic medications covered by Medicare, which provided immense financial relief for seniors on fixed incomes.
- A policy allowing Medicare to pay less for drugs that received accelerated approval from the FDA, which saved taxpayer dollars while encouraging innovation.
- The Gene and Cell Therapy program, a groundbreaking initiative designed to make life-saving cancer treatments more affordable, even embraced by conservative states like Alabama.
“I would expect the President to exercise mature judgment in issuing these executive orders instead of acting like a petulant child to overturn everything his predecessor had done, regardless of how effective they were,” said Pushkin. “The result is that many senior citizens and cancer patients will end up paying more out-of-pocket for their prescription drugs. It’s mean-spirited and counterproductive to target programs that help the most vulnerable just because they were enacted by a political rival.”
Pushkin further noted that these repeals reflect a troubling pattern of prioritizing partisan grudges over sound policy and the well-being of the American people. “These programs weren’t about politics; they were about making life better for everyday Americans. Even red states like Alabama recognized their value and signed up to participate. This is not leadership—it’s spiteful politics at its worst,” he said.
The West Virginia Democratic Party calls on President Trump to reconsider these decisions and urges Congress to act to protect programs that bring real, tangible benefits to millions of Americans.
