WASHINGTON, D.C. (WVDN) – Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, and member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced four grants totaling $32,310,286 through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant program. The funding will be used to support transportation projects across West Virginia.

“Modernizing West Virginia’s infrastructure is critical to our future success, and I am glad to see these resources heading our way,” Senator Capito said. “I know that these projects can make a difference in Martinsburg, Morgantown, and communities across West Virginia in the coming years. I was also proud to author letters of support to the Department of Transportation for several of these projects, and I look forward to seeing their completion benefit our state.”

“This transformative project will create 6.2 miles of dedicated multi-use trails along Tuscarora Creek, connecting to the WV Route 9 regional bicycle trail! This investment will not only enhance connectivity and recreational opportunities, but it will also address critical infrastructure needs, including cleanup of abandoned structures, slope stabilization, and traffic calming measures. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Senator Shelley Moore Capito for her steadfast support in helping secure this grant. Her dedication to improving our region’s infrastructure and quality of life has been instrumental in making this project a reality. This is a big win for Martinsburg—a project that moves us forward real quick, real fast and keeps our momentum going strong,” Martinsburg Mayor Kevin Knowles said.

“We are thrilled and grateful to be recipients of the RAISE grant,” Damien Davis, Acting City Manager of Morgantown and Director of Engineering and Public Works, said. “This project will transform one of the city’s major routes in the southern part of Morgantown, directly impacting four schools, three parks, five neighborhoods, and our downtown area. This initiative will also enhance safety along the Dorsey Avenue and South High Street corridor, creating a more user-friendly environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. We would like to thank Senator Capito, her office, and everyone who offered their support to make this possible.”

Individual awards listed below:

  • $20,820,536 – Martinsburg, W.Va. – Martinsburg Greenway Trail

Senator Capito’s two letters of support are available here and here.

  • $8,000,000 – Morgantown, W.Va. – Multimodal Morgantown Project
