With an opportunity to climb back to a .500 record, on Wednesday, March 10, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans decided to run with that chance and made quick work of the Bluefield Beavers with a 62-39 victory.
East used a big first half to secure the win while getting playing time from the reserves in all of the fourth quarter.
Bluefield’s Cara Brown knocked in a long jumper to open the games scoring, but that would be the Beavers’s one and only lead. Cadence Stewart drained a three-pointer from the corner then she followed that three up with another from the opposite corner, and Brooke Davis did the same as the hot-shooting Spartans led 14-4 midway through the period.
After a Stewart three-point play, Taylor Boswell sealed the momentum boost with a steal of an inbounds pass. She stopped and fired up a left-wing trey that swished through the net, and East held a 25-8 lead after the first quarter.
Davis made a gorgeous pass to Stewart early in the second as Stewart scored the bucket, then Stewart returned the favor to Davis on the very next possession and East was in total control of the contest.
Later in the first half, Allie Dunford and Kenna Sheppard each scored a bucket, and Stewart capped the scoring with a 3-point basket off a nice kick-out pass from Layla Pence.
East led 39-21 at halftime.
The second half was a little sloppier as both teams went back and forth with a plethora of turnovers.
However, the Spartans got a lot of good minutes for their reserves as Sheppard, Ari Gil Edo, Marley and Josie Patterson, Abigail Mathis and Brookelyn Morgan all got valuable time on the floor and contributed.
Mathis scored the final bucket of the night and also grabbed the final rebound as well.
Stewart topped the Spartan scoring with 34 points. She added six rebounds. Dunford had eight points, four assists and four steals, and Davis had seven points, 4 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.
The Spartans (2-2) shot 35% and forced 34 Beaver turnovers.
Bluefield falls to 0-4 on the season.
