CHARLESTON – The West Virginia Sports Writers Association has released the 2024 Class A All-State football team. Greenbrier West placed two seniors on the team following a 5-5 season that saw the Cavaliers narrowly miss the Class A playoffs.

Brandon Poticher earned a first team spot as a defensive utility player. Poticher was a 2023 Honorable Mention selection for his play at linebacker, and his intangibles won him another spot on the All-State team in 2024. Poticher tallied 83 tackles including six tackles for loss. Poticher had a knack for blocking kicks, swatting down six attempts during the season. The six blocks are believed to be a record.

Poticher went through offseason surgery to repair his right shoulder, costing him precious time to prepare in the weight room. Poticher progressively got better as the season wore on, and he had his two best single-game performances in West’s final two games. Poticher logged 11 tackles and a tackle for loss in a win over Sherman and finished up with a career-high 16 tackles in a loss at Midland Trail. Poticher is the 49th first team All-State selection in Greenbrier West’s history.

Evan Vandall earned Honorable Mention status after being thrust into a new position in 2024. Never playing an offensive snap in his previous three seasons in Charmco, Vandall stepped in to fill a void at the quarterback position. Vandall ran and passed his way into the record books at West, setting the school record for rushing attempts in a game with 40 at Petersburg. Vandall tied the school record for passing attempts in a game with 28 at James Monroe (tied Dennis Burns in 1973 vs Greenbrier East). Vandall’s 14 completions at James Monroe are tied for the second-most in a game (tied with Robbie Bragg in 1994 vs Independence), and his 66 completions on the season are the fourth most in Cavalier history.

On the defensive side, Vandall collected 68 tackles, intercepted four passes, defensed four passes, and tallied one tackle for loss. Vandall plucked two interceptions and made ten tackles in the James Monroe contest. Vandall is the 70th Honorable Mention selection in Greenbrier West history. Overall, the Cavaliers had enjoyed 177 total All-State selections in 57 seasons.
