CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVDN) – The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) will host the second annual Country Roads Codes Day at the West Virginia Capitol Upper Rotunda on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. Students from 11 schools will conduct hands-on coding and robotics activities for legislators and the general public.

West Virginia is among the national leaders in establishing computer science (CS) and coding instruction in K-12 classrooms. Data shows that CS courses are available to 78% of West Virginia high school students in public schools, and that CS is integrated for elementary and middle school students. Working in partnership with CodeWV, participating schools are dedicated to supporting the next generation of digital creators and problem solvers.

The following schools and robotics teams attending are:

Moorefield Middle School

Hardy County

Cross Lanes Elementary School

Kanawha County

Sacred Heart Grade School

Kanawha County

Lincoln County High School

Lincoln County

Mylan Park Elementary School

Monongalia County

Teays Valley Christian School

Putnam County

Cranberry-Prosperity Elementary School

Raleigh County

Ridgeview Elementary School

Raleigh County

Shady Spring Elementary School

Raleigh County

Spring Valley High School

Wayne County

Hacker Valley Elementary School

Webster County

Student exhibits will include coding demonstrations, robotics and other activities occurring in classrooms throughout the state.

Scheduled speakers include State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt, West Virginia Senate President Craig Blair and West Virginia House Speaker Roger Hanshaw.

“This event illustrates the level of expertise and critical thinking students must have to master modern computer science concepts,” said Superintendent Blatt. “Students showcase their creativity, technical skill, communication ability, depth of knowledge and range of soft skills which is a testament to the teachers and the learning occurring in our public schools.”
