WHITE SULPHUR SPGS- The River Division of the Greenbrier Tipoff got underway this weekend as kind of the appetizer of basketball at the Greenbrier Resort before the Power 4 teams invade the Resort this coming weekend, Nov. 22 in the Mountain Division.
On day one in the River, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) defeated Charleston Southern 86-76 and in the other game, Tennessee Tech defeated VMI in a thriller, 72-71.
On Saturday, Nov. 16, the consolation and the championship games were held, and it was UTRGV taking home the inaugural championship trophy. They defeated Tennessee Tech 83-58 behind 15 points from Hasan Abdul-Hakim. Trey Miller added 12 points on four 3-pointers, and DK Thorn and Howie Fleming, Jr. added 11 points each.
In the consolation third-place game that happened prior to the title game, VMI hung on to defeat Charleston Southern 80-69.
For the Keydets, Augustinas Kiudulas scored 22 points to lead the team in scoring. Tan Yildizoglu scored 17.
Reis Jones had a huge game for Charleston Southern in the losing effort. He scored 21 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and was a perfect 9-9 from the field.
The Mountain Division which features Power 4 teams Pitt, LSU, Wisconsin, and UCF, will begin play this Friday, Nov. 22.
