If The Dam Should Break
Railroad tracks at Hinton would be 80 feet under water if the dam proposed by the West Virginia Power Company should break. This is the contention of counsel for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company made to the Public Service Commission of West Virginia on the hearing of the application of the power company to erect a large dam on New River above Hinton.
Old Sweet Springs Sold
Through a sale consummated last week, Old Sweet Springs, a noted Monroe County summer resort in the heart of the proposed national park, was taken over by Bluefield and coalfield people. The buildings on the property were designed by Thomas Jefferson and for architectural beauty they are unsurpassed. The tract contains almost a square mile of territory and the hotel, cottages and bath houses, swimming pool, and dance hall, are all of brick construction and form a semi-circle facing a beautiful lawn and grove.
Colored Athletics
The Greenbrier Independent football team was organized August 24, with Coach Renick in charge. They played Alderson, with neither team making a score. On October 10, they played Hinton and were outclassed in every way, most of the Hinton boys being much heavier. The score was 13 to 0 in Hinton’s favor. They played Lewisburg Oct. 17 with some of the best players being absent. After the arrival of Perkins, Liggons, Harris, and Brinkley, their star players, they defeated Lewisburg 14 to 6.

When The Atom Was Unleashed
Senator Flanders of Vermont has made a strong statement against the morality and necessity of atom bombing Japan. He cited the uncontradicted statement of Rear Adm. Elis M. Zacharias that Japan had put out five peace feelers before the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He said the bombs were not needed to win the war, for Japan was beaten; they were dropped “to see what they would do.”
$80,275 At Mortlunda Sale
Sixty-one head of cattle auctioned at the 12th annual purebred Hereford sale at Morlunda Farms, Lewisburg, brought a total of $80,275, or an average of $1,316. Firestone Farms of Columbiana, Ohio, paid $8,500 for one of the six bulls consigned to the sale.
Fish Hatchery Operation
Few people know of the natural spring which provides water for the fish ponds at the White Sulphur fish hatchery. The water flows down to the pond by gravity and has an average flow which varies from 800 to 6,000 gallons per minute.

UFO Lands In Pond; To Be Examined
Two authorities on unidentified flying objects were expected today in Carbondale, PA to examine an object which plunged from the skies Saturday into a four-acre pond. Police, who tried to recover the object, said it glowed for at least nine hours.
Natural Gas Situation Causes Columbia Gas To Allocate Supplies
A worsening natural gas supply situation has forced Columbia Gas of West Virginia to notify 988 large volume industrial customers throughout West Virginia that their allocation of natural gas for the coming winter – already reduced 15 percent during November – would be reduced an additional 20 percent beginning December 1.
Unlock Treasury For Fight Of Inflation
President Ford today unlocked the U. S. Treasury to fight inflation for the first time since last week’s elections and ordered $300 million used to help finance mortgages on existing houses.

GPM Acquires Almost Heaven Hot Tubs
Dick Nevi, executive director of the Greenbrier Valley Economic Development Authority, announced that GPM Industries, Inc., manufacturer of Great Lakes Spas, has acquired Almost Heaven Hot Tubs, located in Renick. Almost Heaven Hot Tubs is one of the original manufacturers of wooden hot tubs and saunas, and remains one of the few wooden tub manufacturers.
Trucks Slow Down On Sandstone
Through the first five days of intense patrolling on both Sandstone and Cheat Mountains, PSC motor carrier enforcement officers inspected 259 trucks at the two locations. Of those inspected, 48 trucks were deemed unsafe and placed out of service. In addition, officers sited 145 others for various vehicle and/or driver defects. Speeds recorded on radar also indicate that the increase presence of law enforcement has slowed truckers down significantly.
Orchestra Booked For Local Event
The dance band that “thrilled the Charleston Regatta Crowd” will bring its unique brand of musical entertainment to the Greater Greenbrier Valley this New Year’s Eve during Lewisburg’s Millennium Ball. The Mel Gillispie Orchestra will provide hours of unbeatable dance music for the “celebration of the millennium.”
