CHARMCO- For the eighth consecutive year, the Greenbrier West Cavaliers are heading back to Charleston for the state volleyball tournament after defeating Montcalm in three consecutive sets to capture the regional title on Thursday, Nov. 7 in Charmco.
West set the tone early and won the first set 25-9, the second 25-5, and capped the third with a 25-7 win.
“Our seniors have been a little quiet this week and tighter than usual. I told them this is your last home game, so just go out and play and have fun and when we play fun that’s when we play our best,” head coach Joe Robertson stated.
The Cavs have never won a match at the state capitol, but this year, after having been ranked number 1 in Class A all year long, that could change drastically.
“We’re definitely not expecting anything to be handed to us. We are ready to go out there and work and give it our all,” senior Megan Griffith said after the game.
We’ve had some great senior leadership this year. It’s nice to have some big leaders stepping up and taking that role,” Griffith added.
Greenbrier West’s schedule this season has not been an easy one, but they overcame a lot to be where they are, and the players think that will help them immensely next week at the state tourney.
“We’ve definitely played tougher teams this year to kind of prepare us and I think just practices and working on the small things and really capitalizing on those things is going to help us out. We are prepared and want to go all the way,” senior all-stater Preslee Treadway said.
A legitimate chance at a championship has the team focused more than ever.
“All the way in. That’s our main goal at this point, that’s all we want,” Treadway concluded.
We need to go down next week and try to play our game and go down with a good attitude,” Robertson said.
“And have fun,” the coach concluded.
The state tournament begins Tuesday, Nov. 12. We will update the Cavaliers game day and opponent when it becomes available.
