FAIRLEA- It’s that time of year where everything you have worked toward comes into focus and becomes a reality.
For the Greenbrier East Spartans volleyball team, the time is now to achieve their ultimate goal. The state tournament.
Greenbrier East will travel to Clendenin tomorrow evening, Thursday, Nov. 7 for a regional final match against the Herbert Hoover Huskies who are 46-6-1 on the season.
At 33-16-4, the Spartans are no slouch and have a plethora of talent capable of playing for the ultimate prize. Coach Matt Sauvage is excited about his team’s opportunity that awaits them tomorrow as East is playing their best volleyball over these last couple weeks.
“We have a very talented group. The players need to continue to play the way they have over the last two weeks. They are playing their best right now. We have a few adjustments we will make but for the most part, we need to take care of our side of the net,” Sauvage said.
Sauvage would love for his seniors to have a chance at getting to Charleston but understands the path to get there. The Spartans compete in one of the toughest regions in the entire state.
“They have had great careers,” Sauvage said of his seniors.
“As individuals and as a team. We have always been in one of the toughest Regions in the State and this year is no different (3 of the top 4 teams in State in the same Region). I would love for this group to get that shot,” the coach exclaimed.
A state tournament appearance would bond this community and shine Sauvage in an even brighter light, but the humble coach wants his girls to share the experience first and foremost.
“I would really enjoy going to states but for me it’s about the girls experiencing that journey. I’ve had my glory days; this is about their experiences and success. I pray they have enjoyed every moment along the way. I just want us to have fun, play hard and take care of our side of the net,” Sauvage concluded.
