Reeling from two straight losses, the Greenbrier East Spartans have just three games left to right the ship on 2024 and they will try to do just that when they play their final road game of the season against the Summers County Bobcats in Hinton.
ABOUT THE BOBCATS:
A Single-A school that is only about 40 minutes from Greenbrier County, Summers County is coached by Justin Pugh and according to the WVSSAC website, has only 29 players on their football roster.
Summers County is rich in tradition and a team that can steal a victory at their home field if they are overlooked and undervalued. They average just 15.7 points per game and allow their opponents to score at a 35.7 clip. Their season-high in points scored is 46 and the most they have allowed is 54.
–Players to Watch—
Summers County: Franklin McClaugherty, Isaiah Lott, Tyson Adkins
Greenbrier East: Brody Hamric, Don Don Penn, Kaden Stone, Keshawn Bland, Brayden Brown
Stats for Summers County are barely available to find, but Tyson Adkins did run for 145 yards on 33 carries against Greenbrier West about a month-and-a-half ago, so he would be a workhouse type back that the Spartans sometimes struggle with. Franklin McClaugherty is a big kid and the Bobcats defense can sometimes be opportunistic—sometimes.
Top 3 Keys to the Game:
If Hamric is healthy, he needs to throw, throw, throw
Can Penn capitalize on his good performance from a week ago?
Bland, Stone, Brown, and others will need to stop Adkins running
Summary and the ONLY prediction I will make this year:
Honestly, without making a prediction, I’m going to make a prediction. The Spartans are going to get win no. 3 in this one. Now, depending on the health of Hamric and even Nate Suttle, who were both hurt last week, that thought process could change, but even if those two cannot go, the Spartans would still have enough pieces to get a win.
As mentioned above, Summers County started the year with just 29 players and are more than likely down a few as is usually the case throughout a physical football season. The Bobcats lost to Greenbrier West 27-0, James Monroe 54-8, and Shady Spring—who the Spartans beat—,49-0.
So, yeah, Greenbrier East should find yards easier to gain, players easier to tackle, and passes easier to catch. However, Summers County will be at home and with a home game so close to Halloween, anything can happen, good or bad. After last week’s shenanigans that not only involved a loss, but some other off the field issues, injuries, and other weird and wild stuff, the Spartans need a win in the worst way, and then can finish out their season in front of their home fans a couple more times before they call it a year.
Ok, fine.
