UNION W.Va. (WVDN) – With agriculture at the forefront of Monroe County’s economy, Union seems like an obvious place to open a business dedicated to farming equipment. The small town, with a population of 548, is home to Preston Fencing & Supply Company with a focus on farm and family. Owner Ben Preston, born and raised in Monroe County, proudly says “We are family owned and operated. We have family working in and outside of the store.”

As Preston prepares to celebrate one year in business on Feb. 5, he is thankful to the community for the support that has allowed his business to expand. What began with fence supplies, livestock tags and cattle equipment has grown to include fresh produce, Monroe County raised beef and even mums for the fall planting enthusiast.

“We also carry Lawsen equipment post drivers and we rent two skid steers and an excavator, so we’re starting to do a little in the rental business,” Preston says.

When it comes to inspiration, Preston Fencing & Supply Company was born from the desire to provide farm-to-table products to the community. The business expanded to include a meat and produce section, which opened on Labor Day of this year. “Being able to enjoy the beef that we raise in Monroe County is the #1 reason why I’m doing this,” Preston says. “Also, it’s about being able to raise cows with no hormones and no antibiotics.”

Looking back on what’s almost been one year in business, Ben Preston credits the community for making it a success. “It’s been a lot of familiar faces coming in and also some unfamiliar faces that have purchased products from us. The community has been really great,” he says. “It’s been a lot more than expected and we would like to thank them for their business. I hope they like everything, and keep coming back.”

With a new year fast approaching, along with its one-year anniversary, the company has plans to make 2025 another period of growth.  “We hope to continue expanding to offer select cuts of meat and things out of the ordinary that you won’t find at the local grocery store,” says Ben Preston. “We are also ramping up production for people to be able to stock their freezers throughout the year, so that’s currently a work in progress.”

Preston Fencing & Supply Company is located at 69 Bud Ridge Road in Union, West Virginia. Store hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
