FRANKLIN- The Greenbrier West Cavaliers, the defending state runners up from a year ago, lost a tough, hard fought opening game on Friday, Aug. 30 to the Pendleton County Wildcats 27-21.
The loss snapped a regular season 13-game win streak.
The Wildcats went up 21-7 in the second quarter after two touchdown catches from Josiah Kimble, the first a 68-yarder from quarterback James Vincell, and the second a 30-yard strike.
But the Cavs answered late in the half when Isaac Agee scored on a 35-yard touchdown reception that cut the Pendleton lead to 21-13 at the break.
Fast forward to the fourth quarter when Evan Vandall scored on a 1-yard run and then ran the 2-point attempt across the goal line as well, and the score was tied at 21-all at that point.
The Wildcats answered with Vincell finding Travis Owens in the end zone for the game’s final score and a Wildcat victory.
Agee had a great game for West and carried the ball 26 times for 163 yards and two total TDs. Brandon Poticher picked up 66 yards on 14 carries.
Vandall only threw the ball five times but turned four completions into 99 yards and a score. His only incompletion was intercepted, and he added 21 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Kamden Sams had two catches for 40 yards and picked off a pass on defense and Ben Butler had a 24-yard catch.
For the Wildcats, Vincell was 16-for-29 for 308 yards and four touchdowns. He did throw two picks. Colton Roberson (5 rec, 107 yards, TD–13 rushes, 97 yards) and Kimble (6 rec, 156 yards, 2 TD) were stellar in their team’s victory.
West will look to rebound this Friday night, Sept. 6 when they host the Summers County Bobcats in Charmco.
