FAIRLEA- August 30th is approaching quickly, and with that in mind, the Greenbrier East Spartan football team is hitting the practice field hard every day since the start of fall camp this past Monday, August 5.

This season, the fieldhouse behind the north end zone is as close to being completed as it’s ever been with just the weight room needing finished, and it will add a lot of excitement around the football program.

“The players are excited to be in the new facility. We’re still working to complete the weight room. Fully equipping the weight room is the last big project. Once the weight room is completed, the facility will be a place an athlete would like to come to work,” head coach Ray Lee said this week.

Lee believes that when the fieldhouse is 100 percent complete, it will attract even more kids to want to be a part of the program, and that the dedication to upgrading facilities at East is great to see.

“Having an attractive football facility should make student athletes feel more valued and wanting to be a part of something great. When you look good, you feel good, it will make you want to play well. All of GEHS sports facilities really stand out when you arrive on campus. We have great sports facilities, soccer, softball, baseball, a new Surfaced track and our football facility. That says a lot about the commitment of the coaches that’s going the extra mile to upgrade their facilities to attract players to all our sports programs,” Lee explained.

As for the action on the field so far?

“Our numbers are hovering around 52-55. The numbers are good to see, which say a lot about the players that made a commitment to be out here representing our football team. It adds a high level of competitiveness when there are good players at several positions,” Lee stated.

“The attitudes have been great, and they work hard every day to get better the next day,” he added.

The Spartans will hold their first scrimmage next Saturday, August 17 when the JV plays Pocahontas County and Pikeview, and the varsity battles James Monroe and Rockbridge, Va.

“Preparation, being prepared both physically and mentally. Continue to work and bond together as a team, coaching staff and bringing our community together,” Lee concluded.
