INSTITUTE- Recently, the Greenbrier East Spartans football team has been competing at several events including a 7-on-7 event at West Virginia State’s campus and also a big man camp on that same campus.
Both positions performed well and according to a post on Greenbrier East Football’s Facebook page, the staff at WVSU said the Spartans had “great representation,”
In the 7-on-7, the Spartans defeated George Washington in the semifinals and made a surprising trip to the final round. However, there, they lost to the Oak Hill Red Devils, but still, it was a great accomplishment for a football team trying to build its image back after last season’s struggles.
“Our entire focus in the offseason was and still is, to build an attitude of competitiveness with a bunch of energy. Compete in everything against each other to make each other better and stronger,” head coach Ray Lee said.
With not a lot of time for actual practice, the coach said he and his staff were extremely pleased and proud at the competitiveness of his young team.
“We really haven’t had a lot of time on the field due to the construction and resurfacing of the track. We had three days of practice before participating in WVSU 7-on-7 and The Big Man Challenge. We were really proud of how our young men performed and competed with minimal preparation and practice time,” Lee explained.
After the performances of both camps, the excitement is building in Fairlea as the Spartans may have a chance to make some noise this year on the field.
“We’re always preparing and developing our young men both physically in the weight room and mentally every chance we can to get on the field. The attitudes of our players and coaches are off the charts with excitement and energy,” Lee concluded.
