CHARLESTON W.Va. (WVDN) – The West Virginia General Services Division (GSD) is gearing up for its annual “Christmas in July” tradition, marking the start of their search for the perfect holiday trees to adorn the Capitol grounds. This longstanding tradition not only celebrates the spirit of the holidays but also showcases the natural beauty of West Virginia’s landscapes.

The search for the perfect tree involves meticulous planning and logistical expertise. To be considered, the trees must stand more than 20 feet tall, with a uniform shape that looks flawless from every angle. Each tree selected by GSD is then meticulously decorated and becomes the centerpiece for holiday festivities at the Capitol.

“The process of selecting our Capitol Christmas trees is both a challenge and a joy,”said Mark D. Scott, cabinet secretary of the Department of Administration. “We look for trees that not only meet our height and shape criteria but also enhance the festive spirit of our Capitol grounds.”

Once identified, the chosen trees undergo careful logistical planning to ensure safe transportation to Charleston. The trees must be located on level ground accessible to Division of Highways’ trucks, with considerations made to avoid any utility poles or meters that could hinder the pickup process.

In 2023, two trees were displayed, one on the Lincoln Plaza with the other on the North Stage. GSD proudly selected a 22-foot Norway Spruce donated by Al Tolliver of Crickmer Tree Farm in Danese, WV, for the North Stage display. For the South Plaza, they partnered with the Governor’s Office to install a majestic 50-foot Balsam Fir harvested from Kumbrabow State Forest in Randolph County.

“We are grateful to the community members and organizations who contribute to this tradition by donating these magnificent trees,” added Secretary Scott. “Their generosity helps us create a warm and festive atmosphere that West Virginians and visitors alike can enjoy throughout the holiday season.”

Individuals interested in donating a tree for consideration are encouraged to contact the GSD Service Desk at 304-352-5483.
