Billy Joe Phillips

Billy Joe Phillips, age 90, of Alderson, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2024, surrounded by his family at the Peyton Hospice House in Lewisburg. He was born June 14, 1934, in Glenray, WV, a son of the late Vernie Floyd and Harriet (Shanklin) Phillips.

After graduating from Alderson High School in 1952, Billy honorably served his country in the United States Army. He proudly worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons at the FPC in Alderson as a unit manager, where he retired after 25 years of service. Billy will be remembered for his love of the WVU Mountaineers; playing golf; landscaping his yard; listening to music; watching sports, especially the NY Yankees; but most of all, spending time with his family, friends, and neighbors.

Billy is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Ann (Hedrick) Phillips.

He is also survived by his son, Joseph Michael Phillips and wife, Lynn, of Charlotte, NC; his daughters, Sandra Phillips Cook of Lewisburg and Julie Ann Muncy and her husband, Jeff, of Eaton, OH; his special niece, who is considered his daughter at heart, Elizabeth “Libby” Harvey and her husband, John, of Alderson; his grandchildren, Lauren Muncy Johnston and her husband, Walker, of Friendsville, MD, Jenna Muncy of West Alexandria, OH, Hannah Cook of Charlotte, NC, Matthew Cook of Pensacola, FL; his great-granddaughter, Emma Blake Johnston of Friendsville, MD; his sisters, Peggy Ballengee of Alderson and Cookie Brown and her husband, Richard, of Caldwell; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Clarence Calvin Phillips, Robert Lee Phillips, Vernie Eugene Phillips; his sister, Doris Jewell Arbaugh; and his twin sister, Betty June Walthall.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 19, at 1 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel in Alderson, with Pastor Ed Midcap officiating. Burial will follow at the Fletcher Addition of the Alderson Cemetery in Alderson, with military funeral honors graveside rights provided by West Virginia Army National Guard from Camp Dawson. Friends may call Wednesday, June 19, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lobban funeral Home Chapel in Alderson.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Online condolences and memories may be shared with the Phillips family at www.lobbanfh.com.

Arrangements by Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson, WV.
