BUFFALO- Five Greenbrier East Lady Spartan seniors reunited one last time on the softball field late last week in the North-South softball tournament in Buffalo.
Playing for Region 3 that also included players from Oak Hill, Woodrow Wilson, Independence, George Washington, Greenbrier West (Julia Herndon), St. Albans and Princeton, the Lady Spartan seniors proved their state tournament run was no fluke as they legitimately had talent flooding their roster.
Taylor Boswell went 5-6 in the two games played with two doubles, two singles, a home run and multiple RBIs. Boswell played second base in game one and shortstop in game two and played great defense in both.
In game one, Kayla Bartley, a Spartan, threw a 5-inning perfect game that included 14 strikeouts. She also belted two homers from the plate and was named the game’s MVP.
Lily Carola, an all-tournament selection at the state tournament a few weeks ago, pitched a gem in game two that clinched the championship for her and her Region 3 teammates and also took home MVP honors as well.
Alanis McClary was the catcher in game one and did a great job. She also hit well at the plate.
Finally, Gracie Gumm was the other senior to represent the Spartans and was called “one of the best centerfielders in the state” by a coach.
Region 3 run-ruled their opponents in both games.
Bartley and Boswell each participated in the home run derby as Bartley took home the crown. She hit 10 home runs in the contest and Boswell blasted five of her own.
