The West Virginia Senate took up Senate Bill 451 late on Monday, with Senator Patricia Rucker (R-Jefferson), chair of the Committee on Education, submitting a new set of amendments to the bill. Among the items that would be placed back in the bill are charter schools and Educational Savings Accounts, just two of several highly contested measures taken in the bill and two which have undergone significant changes since the bill’s introduction.
In response to the bill, teachers have gone on strike. Much of the contention has been over a select handful of major problems about which teachers and legislators voting against the bill have been concerned since the beginning.
