LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – The Greenbrier Watershed Earth Day Celebration started out with a steady stream of vehicles lining up ready to see what the event offered and as the day wore on the line of vehicles grew and grew.

People were milling about eating food from the food truck and bidding on the beautifully decorated rain barrels up for auction. On hand were several vendors for celebration-goers to look over and live entertainment was performing on site. The Greenbrier Grotto was there with its squeeze box to let people experience some of what it’s like crawling through tight spaces inside of a cave. Grotto member Riley Stalnaker was helping curious attendees with the box during the Earth Day event.

Stalnaker said the Grotto had been able to gain some possible new recruits thanks to the event. When asked how low anyone got in the squeeze box Riley replied that 7 inches was as low as anyone had gotten so far.

It’s always a fun pastime to see who can squeeze through the lowest, Stalnaker noted.

In regards to the event, Stalnaker stated, “We were also there to help remind everyone how important it is to keep our caves free of pollution due to the fact that the vast majority of our local caves drain into local springs including Davis Spring which is the largest in the state. The water from these springs ends up in our rivers and streams, including the Greenbrier River.

Multiple organizations were part of the Earth Day event including the Greenbrier Watershed, Lost World Caverns, Greenbrier Grotto and the West Virginia Cave Conservancy.
