MAXWELTON W.Va. (WVDN) – Mike Williams, a member of the Maxwelton Ruritan Club, was recently honored with the Ruritan 4-H Leader Service Award. This award recognizes the outstanding leadership and community service that Williams has given to the community for many years. Ruritan National Director Patty Hamilton attended the March meeting to make the special presentation.
Williams was honored as the Maxwelton Ruritan of the Year and Lower WV District Ruritan of the Year in 2017. He has served the Maxwelton club as Vice President from 2020-2022; Treasurer 2017-2018; Board of Director 2023. He was a member of the Fairlea Ruritan club from 1999-2003 when they disbanded. Williams joined the Maxwelton club in 2014 and has been a very active member bringing new ideas to the members.
Williams is a 4-H All Star in Greenbrier County. He is a Greenbrier County 4-H pin wearer. He was the State of WV 4-H Leadership winner in 1965 and All Star of the Year for Greenbrier County in 1969. He was the co-author of a book that details the history of 4-H in Greenbrier County. For 26 years he volunteered as the night watchman during 4-H camp and served as a counselor. He was presented with the Greenbrier County Youth Camp Honor Roll award in 2016.
Along with Ruritan and 4-H, Williams has served as treasurer for the Knights of Columbus and volunteers every Lent serving fish dinners on Fridays. He is a member of St. Catherine’s and St. Charles Borromeo Catholic churches.
He has been a music booster at GEHS since 1696 and volunteered as a chaperone for band trips for 43 years. He continues to work the concession stand for the band boosters on Friday night home football games. He is a charter member of the Greenbrier Historical Society and is on the scholarship committee for Pocahontas County High School.
The Maxwelton Ruritan club is proud of all his accomplishments and are honored that he continues to volunteer with them. The Maxwelton and surrounding communities are a better place for having Williams live and serve there.
