FAIRLEA- The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans enjoyed a highly successful 2023-24 basketball season that ended in the state tournament in Charleston with a loss to the state runners-up, Morgantown. There was a myriad of reasons for the magical year, but two of those reasons–well, girls– were recently honored with post season hardware.
The Class AAAA all-state teams were announced a couple days ago, and the Spartans placed their young, dynamic backcourt of sophomore Kennedy Stewart and freshman Ava Workman on the list.
Stewart was named to the second team after averaging a team-best 16.5 points per game. Stewart also shot over 90 percent from the free throw line, led the team in threes (71), assists (65) and also pulled down 5.5 rebounds per contest.
From game number one, Workman hit the court running and never slowed down. She averaged 13.4 ppg and led the team with 84 steals. She was–and is for that matter– a terrific defender. She was placed on the honorable mention team.
As long as everyone decides to return, the Spartans could potentially be even better in 2024-25.
Congratulations to Stewart and Workman on their prestigious honor.
