PIKEVIEW- The Greenbrier West Lady Cavaliers got a little bit of a challenge early on Tuesday, March 19 at Pikeview.
However, an 11-run scoring outburst in the top of the sixth inning put the finishing touches on a 20-5 victory.
In the first frame, the Cavs picked up three runs on Lady Panther errors and got a sacrifice fly from Kyndall Taylor as West took an early 4-0 lead. But in the bottom half, Pikeview showed they came to battle. They got two runners on, and Emma Compton hit an RBI groundout. Three batters later, Kaci Fine roped an RBI single to center off West starter, Taylor, and then Chauntel Dunn scored on a passed ball and just like that, West’s lead was cut to 4-3 after one.
Diana Porter scored on a passed ball at home plate in the second and that was followed by Preslee Treadway’s sac fly. The next batter, Maddie Fields, then hit a liner to right and reached on an error which allowed Brilee Redden to cross home plate and after two-and-a-half innings, the Lady Cavs (4-0) led 7-3. The Panthers would answer with two more runs and it was evident at the time that Greenbrier West was in for a game as they led just 7-5 after two.
Well, so they thought.
Fields got an RBI base hit in the fourth and a Julia Herndon groundout scored Redden to make it 9-5 at that point.
Redden came in to pitch and shut the whole thing down. Pikeview got nothing against the super sophomore except for drawing a few walks but Redden made quick work of the Panthers the rest of the way.
Fast forward to the top of the sixth and the Cavs got their first 10 batters on base. Included in the rally was a double from Redden, an RBI double from Fields, a single from Herndon, and a 2-run single from Taylor. Fields came back up for the second time in the frame and laced another RBI double. Brooklyn Adkins eventually capped the huge inning with an RBI base knock to left. After that, it was 20-5, Cavaliers. Redden walked a couple Pikeview hitters in the bottom half but struck out the side to seal the victory.
Redden went 3-3 with two doubles, 5 runs scored at the plate and pitched 4 hitless innings with 10 strikeouts. Fields continued her strong start to 2024 with a 3-5 day with 3 runs scored and 4 knocked in. Taylor went 2-5 with a run scored and 3 RBIs and Adkins had 3 RBIs as well.
