FAIRLEA- With the regular season winding down, the Greenbrier East Spartans have a little bit of business to finish before beginning sectional play in several days.
East welcomed the Class AA no. 2 ranked Shady Soring Tigers to Fairlea on Thursday night, Feb. 15 and after battling with the state title contenders for a half, the Spartans let the game gradually get away from them in the second half and suffered a 66-45 defeat.
It was the third loss to the Tigers this season for East.
When the game started, Shady jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a Jack Williams 3 and two buckets from Amarr Maxwell, but a couple minutes later, Gabe Patton hit two free throws and then drained a triple. Brody Hamric then scored for a 9-9 tie with a couple minutes left in the first quarter. Shady would get the next four points, but a buzzer beating layup from Peyton DeHaven made the score 13-11, Tigers, after one.
Nathan Dixon’s short jumper followed by his 3 trimmed the Tigers lead to 18-16 early in the second. The Spartans cut the lead to two at 23-21 following g Donavin Penn’s three-point play, but the Tigers closed the first half on a 6-0 run and led 29-21 at the half.
The second half belonged all to Shady Spring. Maxwell was near unstoppable for a short stretch in the third, but Layne Lambert hit a 3 midway through the quarter that made the score 40-28. Patton trimmed it to 42-34, but from that point on, Shady pulled ahead and never looked back.
When the clock hit zeroes, they waltzed back home with a win.
