CHARMCO – On a night dubbed “Hannah Sweet Night” in honor of the lone Cavalier senior, Greenbrier West rolled to a 62-46 win in front of an enthusiastic Charmco crowd. Sweet delighted the crowd with an early three-pointer as West cruised out to an 18-10 first quarter advantage.

Leading the way for Greenbrier West was Preslee Treadway. The junior forward dominated the paint from the outset. Treadway’s first points came on a dish from Brilee Redden and a quick layup, prompting Midland Trail head coach John Mark Kincaid to call a timeout with only 14 seconds off the clock. The adjustment failed to slow down Treadway and she poured in 13 first quarter points and pulled down six rebounds.

Freshman Raelyn Morris, a three-point specialist, knocked down a pair of three-pointers to keep Trail within 8 points of the homestanding Lady Cavaliers. Jayla Barnhouse added three points, but West led 18-10 after one quarter.

Greenbrier West’s scoring output evened out across the lineup in the second quarter. Maddie Fields drilled a three-pointer and tallied five points. Lacey Walker, a junior forward that has filled in for head coach Mark Agee since the loss of Abigail Thomas to injury, also knocked down a three pointer and scored five points as well. Treadway hit the other basket for the Cavaliers.

Morris was able to hit on 2 of 3 shots from three and added a free throw for seven points in the quarter. Naveah Hall added three points for the Patriots who trailed 30-20 at the halftime break.

As the second half commenced, Treadway again asserted her dominance in the paint with five points and seven rebounds. Brilee Redden stroked a three-pointer along with Walker, and Fields collected two more points and two rebounds. Reserve fireball Sam Holliday drilled two foul shots and the Cavaliers built a 47-32 third quarter advantage.

Rumor Barnhouse, a junior guard for Midland Trail that was unable to play in the first matchup between the schools on January 22, finally found her range from three and dropped in a pair of treys. Barnhouse was 0-7 from three in the first half but made her only two attempts of the third quarter. Hall added four points for Trail and Barnhouse’s sister Jayla added a bucket.

The fourth quarter saw Redden step up for Greenbrier West and collect seven points and three rebounds. Fields was also a huge factor with four points and five rebounds. Sweet narrowly missed her second three-pointer of the night when her corner jumper came with a foot touching the line, but the crowd favorite received an ovation, nonetheless.

Midland Trail’s strategy seemed to be live or die by the three as the patriots fired up 12 treys in the quarter. Morris connected on a pair of threes and Rumor Barnhouse and Ava Campbell each knocked down a three. Whitney Bibb had the only other Patriot points of the fourth quarter after Rumor fouled out at the 2:47 mark.

Preslee Treadway led the Cavaliers with 22 points and 15 rebounds, closely followed by Maddie Fields’ 15-point, 13 rebound night. Brilee Redden was solid with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Lacey Walker had a fantastic outing with 8 points, Hannah Sweet with five, and Sam Holliday with two.

Raelyn Morris led Midland trail with 19 points, Rumor Barnhouse had 9, Navaeh Hall scored 8, Jayla Barnhouse 5, Ava Campbell 3, and Whitney Bibb 2.

Greenbrier West improves to 12-6 and travels to Oak Hill on Monday, February 12. Midland Trail drops to 6-12 and travels to Pikeview on the same night.
