Delores Ann Childress Mattox of White Sulphur Springs, WV, was born on August 12, 1939, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia to Ella Luvenia Pettis Childress.
Delores departed this life at her earthly home in the early morning of Friday, June 22, 2018.
Delores and her twin sister, Doris, were baptized on Easter Sunday, April 2, 1961 at First Baptist Church in White Sulphur Springs. Delores would go on to be a Sunday school teacher and the assistant superintendent of the Sunday School at First Baptist Church. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church of White Sulphur Springs, where she was a lay-speaker and Bible study teacher.
Delores attended Bethune Graded School in White Sulphur Springs and Bolling High School in Lewisburg, WV, and graduated from White Sulphur Springs High School. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education from West Virginia State College in Institute, WV, on January 22, 1965. She received her Master of Arts degree from Salem University in Salem, WV on December 18, 1997. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.
Delores taught at White Sulphur Springs High School from 1966-1968 and Greenbrier East High School from 1968-2000. She retired from teaching in 2000. In 2009, she published a book of her poetry, titled “Collection of Poetry,” and dedicated it to her mother. She enjoyed family, church-related activities, Bible study, sports, reading, writing, and teaching.
She was preceded in death by her son, Clarence Maceo Mattox; her mother, Ella Luvenia Childress; two sisters, Julia Virginia Keith and Serelda Luvenia Burns; and four brothers, Robert Wilson Childress, James Albert Howard Childress, Owens Fredrick Childress, and Thomas Evaughn Childress.
Left to celebrate and cherish her life are her daughter, Dedra Mattox-Nalley (Robert) of Burtonsville, MD; three grandchildren, Specialist John Jones (Tina) of Fort Drum, NY; Jasmine Jones of Burtonsville; and Isaiah Mattox of White Sulphur Springs; her twin sister, Doris Ann Campbell (Maynard) of White Sulphur Springs; her sister, Carol Frances Carter of White Sulphur Springs; one brother, Lorenza Steward Childress (Grace) of New Paltz, NY; a daughter-in-law, Tia Mattox of White Sulphur Springs; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The services are scheduled for Monday, July 2, 2018, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in White Sulphur Springs with Rev. Gregory Scott officiating.
Viewing will be between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the D. A. Mattox Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Dedra Mattox.
