WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS W.Va. (WVDN) – In the early hours of Jan. 4, at approximately 8:14 a.m., the local community witnessed an unwavering display of bravery and collaboration as emergency responders rushed to the scene of a structure fire on Big Draft Road. Additionally, firefighters were able to save the family’s pet 45 pound tortoise. The White Sulphur Springs Volunteer Fire Department released the following statement:
“At approximately 8:14 a.m. Jan. 4 the Department was toned for a structure fire on Big Draft Road. E3001 responded with four members and arrived on scene to find a cottage fully involved in fire that was attached to the main residence via a covered breezeway that was already over taken by the fire with extension into the main residence.
“Assistance for water and manpower was requested. Mutual aid was provided by Lewisburg Fire-Company 20, Frankford Volunteer Fire Department, Fairlea Volunteer Fire Department, Ronceverte Volunteer Fire Department, Dunlap Volunteer Fire and Rescue and Anthony Creek VFD.
“An aggressive interior attack was performed on the main residence on divisions one and two, a family pet, a 45 pound tortoise named Tank, was removed from the residence by 2nd Assistant Chief Gary Workman of Company 20 Tank was doing well and was cleaned up by EMS and given o2 [oxygen].
“White Sulphur Springs EMS also provided rehab for all departments operating and also acquired lunch from Hardee’s for all crews that was donated by them.
“Assistance was also provided by White Sulphur Springs Police Department, Greenbrier County Homeland Security & Emergency Management and Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department.”
