Janet Stover Shirey
Janet Stover Shirey, age 90, of Lewisburg, WV, passed December 27, 2023, at Seneca Trail Healthcare Center. Her long struggle with dementia has ended, and the infirmities of body and mind no longer exist. She is now in a much better place. She was a beautiful and loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
She was born on January 12, 1933, in Swiss, WV, the daughter of the late Winfred Ross Stover and Orpha Jane Covey Stover. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, Dr. Robert Garland Shirey; along with sisters, Joycelyn Spencer and Madeline Snyder.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Dr. Robert A. Shirey (Emily); daughters, Dr. Carol Shirey, Kay Shirey, and Jane Shirey Krebs (Bert); sister, Mary Ann Lagos (Johnny); grandchildren, Jennifer Shirey Murray (John), Jessica Martin Henshaw (Shane), Travis McClintic (fiancé, Jessie Surgeon), Christine Shirey Fosdick (Mark), Ashby Martin, Elise McClintic Mann (Cory), E.V. Krebs, Sam Krebs; great-grandchildren, Orian Post, Audra Murray, Oliver Murray, Georgia Henshaw, Sterling Henshaw, Gwen Fosdick, Steven Fosdick; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was raised in Raleigh County, WV, and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. Following high school, she completed Secretarial School and soon met Bob Shirey. They married in 1953 and moved to Baltimore, MD, for Bob to complete medical school at the University of Maryland. They started their family in 1954, at which time she dedicated herself to being a mom and homemaker. During those years, she was very active in the PTA and other planning committees with the public schools, church committees, garden club, and the Women’s Medical Auxiliary. Throughout her life, she was active in the Methodist Church and was a member of Lewisburg United Methodist Church.
Once her children were grown, she went to college and received her degree in accounting. She was the first woman to serve on the Board of Directors of Blue Grass Savings and Loan Association of Lewisburg. She was also the office manager and bookkeeper for Bob’s medical office, until her retirement.
She loved life and loved her family. She and Bob rarely missed a church program, dance recital, band event, or sports event of their children or grandchildren from kindergarten through college. She will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Sue Wilson, Angela Radford, and Drema Seldomridge McClung, who cared for her at home. Without their compassionate assistance, she would not have been able to remain at home as long as she did. The family also thanks the wonderful and loving staff at Seneca Trail Healthcare Center for the comfort and care they provided during her final years.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at Lewisburg United Methodist Church with Rev. Bev Colombo officiating. Visitation will take place at the church an hour before the service from 1 to 2 p.m. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall of the church.
In lieu of flowers and food, contributions may be made in her memory to Lewisburg United Methodist Church, PO Box 69, Lewisburg, WV 24901; Greenbrier County Humane Society, 151 Holliday Lane, Lewisburg, WV 24901; or Greenbrier East High School Baseball, 273 Spartan Lane, Lewisburg, WV 24901.
