John Lee Withrow

John Lee Withrow, of Lewisburg, passed away on Monday, December 11, 2023.

John is survived by his wife of 23 years, Ruth Ann Houchins Holliday Withrow; son, Jon Paul Withrow; step-children, Terry R. Holliday (Linda), Patricia Nelms, Phyllis M. Crumpton (Curtis), and Chris D. Holliday (Sharon); brother, Glenn (Barbara) Withrow; several grandchildren and step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, John Withrow and Anna Cantrell Withrow; children, Michael Withrow and Pamila Withrow; brothers, Hubert, Alfred, Lester, Johnny, Kenneth, Frederick; sisters, Maxine Minor, Virginia Lunsford, and Mary Childers.

John was born in Leslie, WV, but spent most of his childhood in McRoss, WV. He joined the U.S. Marines at age 17 and retired as a Gunnery Sargent with 20 years of service. He served his first tour of duty in Korea, then served two tours in Vietnam. His last three years were at Camp Lejeune in an administrative position.

After retirement, he obtained a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, while attending Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rainelle, WV. He was also the Governor of The Loyal Order of the Moose in Tappahannock, VA, and obtained the Pilgrim Degree at the Rainelle Moose Lodge.

He will be missed beyond measure.

Special thanks to Dr. Randolph Modlin for his excellent and compassionate care for John throughout the years; and to the staff of Rainelle Healthcare Center for their care over the past few months.

Visitation will be held at Smathers Funeral Home in Rainelle, on Friday, December 15th, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Clintonville on Saturday, December 16 at 1 p.m.
