Richard Dale “Dick” Jones
Richard Dale “Dick” Jones, 83, of Glencoe, AL, passed away Sunday, November 12, 2023, surrounded by loved ones at his home, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Richard was born August 23, 1940, one of eight children of Charley and Sissie Mae Jones. He grew up on Muddy Creek Mountain in Lewisburg, WV. He later moved to Ohio, where he met and married pretty Peggy Sue Baker.
After a short stint following his father as a dairy farmer, he began what turned into a long career with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. Richard retired from Goodyear as a middle manager after 34 years of service, having worked at plants in Akron, OH; Madisonville, KY; and Gadsden, AL. His family is always proud to hear his co-workers and employees say he’s the best supervisor they ever had.
Richard was a talented woodworker. His birdhouses grace many trees, from Alabama to Kentucky to West Virginia. He also was an excellent gardener and shared his abundant crops with his neighbors. He was especially famous for his tomatoes. He enjoyed trips to Hawthorne, FL; Destin, FL; and the Great Smoky Mountains, where he loved hiking. He introduced his family to his favorite trails, whether they wanted to go or not. He said he never got lost, he just took shortcuts that took two hours longer than they should have, and he always emerged with a story.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Stephen Dale Jones; sister, Georgia Flack; and brothers, Bobby Jones and Willie Jones; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was a loving and devoted husband to Peggy; a cherished father to Susan (Alan) Wood, Teresa (Scott) Hindsman, and Melanie Jones; a doting grandfather to Christopher Hindsman, Stephen Wood, Robert Hindsman, and his favorite granddaughter, Mary Wood; and adoring great-grandfather to Kipten Wood, Tucker Hindsman, Lily Hindsman, and Casen Wood. He also is survived by his sisters, Mary Ellen Morgan and Dalice Berkshire; brothers, Cohen Jones and Charles Jones; and special cousin, Everal (Judy) Tomblin.
