PRINCETON, WV- It was a night to forget for the Greenbrier East Spartans after they traveled to Princeton for a gridiron battle with the Tigers.
Nothing seemed to go right for East and after Princeton scored touchdowns on their first two plays of the game, things just never really got any better either as the Spartans were on the wrong end of a 56-7 defeat.
The Tigers took the opening kickoff and on the game’s opening play, quarterback Chance Barker hit Dom Collins who had gotten 10 yards behind the defense, for a 60-yard touchdown pass. After Saeed Aboulhosn’s extra point, the Tigers led 7-0 just 20 seconds into the game.
East punted the ball back to the Tigers on the ensuing drive and again, all they needed was one snap. Marquel Lowe took the handoff and raced 27 yards untouched for a score, and East trailed 14-0 with 9:04 left.
A couple possessions later following a series of punts from East’s Carter Hamilton, Lowe got loose again, this time on a 17-yard scoring run, and the Tigers led 21-0 with still just under two minutes left in the first quarter.
That score stayed the same as the second period started, but on the Tigers second play of the second quarter, Brad Mosser caught a 27-yard TD pass from Barker in the corner of the end zone and Princeton went ahead 27-0 with 11:46 left in the first half.
Princeton would add three more first half touchdowns and take a 48-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, both teams agreed to play 6-minute third and fourth quarters. That is when the Spartans finally got on the scoreboard on a 20-yard pass from Brody Hamric to Abram Wickline as Wickline took a swing pass and found his way in the end zone and was able to squeeze just inside the front pylon.
Collins had five catches for 142 yards and two TD’s. Barker was 9-of-11 for 200 yards and three scores.
Wickline caught two passes for 36 yards and a score and was named McDonald’s player of the game. Burdette caught two for 34.
East will return home this Friday, Oct. 6 for a battle with their rivals, the Oak Hill Red Devils.
