Charles Winfred Baker, 87, of Ronceverte, WV, passed away Saturday, December 2, 2017, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea, WV.
Winfred was born January 19, 1930, to Lester and Lola Baker of Ronceverte.
With honor, Winfred served his country in the Army during the Korean War, and with pride he was employed by the CSX Transportation Company as a brakeman until his retirement.
His life changed drastically when the love of his life, Jean, passed away, but he continued his passion of serving others; helping others in need; weekly visits to nursing homes; fishing with his buddies, Raymond Toothman and Sebert Weikle; hunting with Dale Allen and others; all the camp gatherings, especially his Fourth of July extravaganza; watching any sport on TV with Bobby and Susie Toothman; attending Greenbrier East basketball, football, and baseball games with Bob Wilson, Bill Shafer, and his brothers, Randolph and Toby; his socializing at Gary’s Garage in Ronceverte; and the list goes on and on.
He never stopped doing, serving, or giving until the night he passed. But his greatest passion was serving the Lord Jesus Christ, who he accepted as his Lord and Savior some 50 years ago. His personal relationship with the Lord changed his life and his family’s life forever. He will be missed by everyone.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Morgan Baker, who preceded him by 14 years this past September and whom he loved until his death; his father, Lester Baker; mother, Lola Baker, who died during his child birth; his second mother, Leta Baker; sister, Mildred Wykle; brothers-in-law, Charles Gainey and Floyd Toney; nephew, Ray Baker; and special aunt, “Aunt Annie.”
Winfred is survived by his sons, Danny Baker (Terry) and Darrel Baker (Sherry), all of Lewisburg, WV; granddaughter, Brenna Baker of Lewisburg; grandsons, Brandon Baker of Lewisburg, Britton Baker and fiancee, Stephanie Crites, of Clarksburg, WV, and Dr. Chris Baker of Charlotte, NC; sisters, Dorothea Judy (Harris) of Davidson, NC, Roberta Cole of Tempe, AZ, Phyllis Tony, Evelyn Gainey, and Jackie Dyer, all of Richmond, VA, Jeannie Bostic (Steve) of Alderson, WV, and Debbie Masters (Keith) of Ronceverte; brothers, Delmas Baker (Elizabeth) of San Hose, Panama, and Randolph Baker and Toby Baker, both of Ronceverte; brother-in-law, Hugh Barnwell of White Sulphur Springs, WV; nieces and nephews; and many special friends in his life, especially Ivan Allen and Bobby Toothman.
Winfred’s funeral service was held at 2 PM on Thursday, December 7, 2017, at the Zion’s Light Baptist Church outside Ronceverte, where he faithfully attended, with Pastor Gary Baker officiating.
Friends fellowshipped with the family one hour before the service at 1 PM at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations in Winfred’s honor be made to the Dana Morgan Harrison Scholarship Fund, 425 Academy Street, Ronceverte, WV 24970.
