FAIRLEA/CHARMCO- You know when the summer is over?
When fall sports practices begin.
On Monday, July 31 Greenbrier East and West hit the fields and were back at it in midseason form ready to get 2023 up and running.
The Cavaliers had 55 kids show up for football, the most that have shown up in years for new West head coach Kelly Vaughan, and assistant coach/athletic director Jared Robertson was extremely pleased.
“Attitudes were great to be honest,” Robertson said.
“Kids are excited and worked hard pushing each other. We have some depth and competition always helps.
The Spartans opened their football camp at the free parking lot for the fairgrounds while the turf and track gets installed which should be ready in the next couple weeks.
Coach Ray Lee had positive feelings and thinks his team is in good shape for the foreseeable future.
“Turnout was about what we expected which was 48 or 49 players which was pretty parallel with our offseason workouts. That’s an indication of these players being committed to our program, coaches, and the community of Greenbrier East High School,” Lee sad.
He was also impressed with his team’s attitude.
“Attitudes were great, especially from the players that are ready to step in and accept their newly assigned roles, and for other players, their readiness to improve on their performance in the position they’ve been playing already,” Lee concluded.
The Spartans open their season on August 25 at Point Pleasant. Greenbrier West hosts Pendleton County on the same evening.
