White Sulphur Springs, W.V. (WVDN) – The White Sulphur Springs site of the Energy Express Program had a successful 2023 summer. Many celebrity readers and other readers from Greenbrier County devoted their time to come in and read, write, and interact with the students.
The WSS site welcomed such celebrities as Stephen Baldwin, Thomas Taylor, Jeff Campbell, Mayor Kathy Glover, her daughter Katherine Glover Shelton, Greenbrier County’s Santa Claus Jimmy Vance, Howard Fraley, and many more. Many teachers from Greenbrier County devoted their time to come in and read as well. These included Jennifer McCallister, Brindi Nida, Casey Whitlow, Kristi Caraway, Serena Judy, and more. The White Sulphur Springs Energy Express Program also had many people from the community volunteer to read.
The Open House was successfully attended on Friday, July 21st in which the students put on a play titled “The Enormous Turnip” as the weekly themed book. The parents and students were treated to a spaghetti dinner which was donated by Howard Fraley, WSS Food Lion Manager.
The students at this site have done many activities in reading, writing, STEAM, and art activities. During the community themed week, the students did their community service project by painting rocks for a rock garden they made in front of the school. During the last week of Energy Express, they also had Howard Fraley, store manager and Tara Sullivan, deli worker, from the White Sulphur Springs Food Lion come in and let the students decorate their own cupcakes. They also had a fun filled water day!
The mentors, community coordinator, and site supervisors community service project was also successful. They planted flowers, painted the flower beds, and painted some of the schools classrooms with the help of Lowe’s. Lowe’s donated the flowers, soil, and paint for this project. They would like to give a special thanks to Lowe’s for helping us be able to complete their service project.
The WSS site includes the following workers: Joy Vance as the site supervisor, Meghan McCallister as the community coordinator, and Jennifer Canterbury, Amie Cooper, B’Launa Westmoreland, and Sarah Jewel as the mentors.
