BRIDGEPORT, WV- After a miraculous run through the loser’s bracket that ultimately placed them in the final four of the state tournament, the Central Greenbrier 10-12 all-stars are coming back home after a 6-5 loss to Martinsburg on Tuesday, July 18.
CG went up 2-0 early, then led 4-3 in the fourth, but eventually ran out of outs.
Acen Workman and Peyton Ervin hit back-to-back singles in the second inning, then Colton DeHaven walked to load the bases. Carter Huffman then singled, and Workman crossed home plate for a 1-0 Central Greenbrier lead. Ervin would then score on a wild pitch as CG built a 2-0 lead after the top of the second.
Martinsburg put up three runs in the bottom of the third off CG pitcher Bo Bundy and took a 3-2 lead after three innings of play.
However, the resiliency of Central Greenbrier showed n their heart all tournament and they battled back in the top of the fourth. Bundy walked and Elijah Sherman followed with a double. Two batters later, Peyton Ervin lined a 2-run single to center that gave CG the lead back at 4-3.
In the top of the fifth with CG down 5-4, Aalex Hanna scored on a passed ball to tie the game up at 5-all.
However, a short sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth allowed Martinsburg to take the lead for good. CG went down in order in the sixth to conclude the contest.
Ervin led CG at the plate and went 2-3 with a run and two RBIs. Huffman also drove in a run.
Central Greenbrier’s run is over, but the community enjoyed watching the team and following them on their journey.
