MORGANTOWN, WV (WVDN) – Unwavering resilience, ceaseless determination, and profound transformation – these are the defining characteristics of the Spring 2023 cohort of the Step Up for Women Construction Pre-apprenticeship Program (SUFW) hosted by West Virginia Women Work (WVWW).
In the face of economic adversities, 19 women rose to the challenge and took control of their destinies. Undeterred by the fact that all were living under the Federal Poverty Guidelines, they transformed their lives through the power of education, dedication, and a shared mission for success. “Our program participants, predominantly single parents and heads of households, have displayed tremendous strength,” says Carol Phillips Executive Director of WVWW. “They joined the program in pursuit of a brighter future, and their astounding achievements are a testament to their hard work.”
An incredible 73% of these dedicated women saw employment gains or experienced a substantial increase in pay due to the program. With their wages catapulting from an average starting wage of $3.88 to a remarkable $18.28, these women have shattered the barriers of their past, increasing their income by an extraordinary 371%.
“These empowered graduates are now commanding nontraditional roles like Hydro Blasting Technicians, Security professionals, Electrical Apprentices, Machine Shop Technicians, Laborers, and Equipment Operators,” continues Carol Phillips. “They have taken control of their economic independence, injecting an additional $226,970 into the local economy annually and radically improving their families’ lives.”
The cohort took home a total of 102 industry-recognized credentials, and one exemplary student was hand-picked by the City of Charleston for Lead Supervisor Certification Training.
These triumphs showcase the essence of the SUFW program: empowerment, transformation, and victory. Let the successes of the Spring 2023 cohort inspire taking action. The time is now. Apply for the upcoming Fall cohorts and start a journey toward a rewarding and empowered future.
