BRIDGEPORT, WV- No one will ever accuse the Central Greenbrier 10-12 all-stars for not earning their stripes.
At least not this year.
With the lucky number seven apparently in their favor for the day, CG is now one of just six teams left in the state tournament after a nail-biting, 7-6 victory over Moorefield on Sunday, July 16. It was the second win of the day for CG after they defeated Ona Milton 7-4 earlier this morning.
Central Greenbrier has shown tremendous resiliency in the tourney. After losing their opener to Hurricane, CG has reeled off three straight wins, and honestly, are looking like a legitimate contender to win it.
The Moorefield win was not without its drama, however.
With two outs in the top of the first, Bo Bundy singled to left field. Then, Elijah Sherman followed that hit with a triple to center, and CG grabbed an early 1-0 lead.
Moorefield tied it up in the bottom half on an RBI single.
CG grabbed the momentum that carried them for most of the game in the second frame. Three consecutive singles, including a perfect bunt from Cooper Sabbag, loaded the bases. That is when Kayden Hinkle doubled down the first base lne and cleared the bases for a 3-run hit. Hinkle then scored on Alex Hanna’s base hit and after two innings, CG had extended their advantage to 5-1.
They loaded the bases again in the fourth, and once again capitalized. Sabbag got hit by a pitch and Peyton Ervin, who singled to lead off the inning, scored. Two batters later, James Godby drew a bases loaded walk and Colton DeHaven scored. After those sequences, CG led 7-1.
Fast forward to the bottom of the sixth, with Central Greenbrier still in complete control with a 7-1 lead. But Moorefield did not allow them to make it an easy victory.
Moorefield made the score 7-5 before Central Greenbrier recorded the first out, and things were looking bleak. Then with the score 7-6 and runners on second and third, Bundy struck out the final hitter and CG celebrated.
Sherman, DeHaven and Huffman each had two hits. Hinkle had three RBIs. DeHaven also led the team in runs scored with two.
