CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVDN) – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) issued the following statement on Friday, June 23, 2023, in remembrance of the 23 lives lost during the severe flooding that occurred seven years ago on June 23, 2016:
“We will never forget the 23 West Virginians we lost on June 23, 2016, and the scars that it created in our communities. Families’ lives were changed forever, schools were decimated, businesses were forced to close, and many West Virginians were left without a home. To this day, reminders of the floods and its aftermath remain as we continue to rebuild.
“I will always remember the immediate action that the people of West Virginia took in response to this devastating flooding. Within hours, shelters were constructed, boots were on the ground, resources were made available, and the West Virginia spirit was palpable. Seven years later, I ask that West Virginians continue showing that West Virginia spirit. Help a friend in need, be kind to a stranger, be that light in your community. West Virginians are strong, and we will always be at our strongest together.”
