Three potential pieces of legislation are passing through the U.S. Congress concerning the opioid epidemic, introduced by Representative Evan Jenkins and Senator Joe Manchin. One, introduced by Jenkins in the House of Representatives, would establish a task force to address fentanyl and heroin trafficking. The other two bills are approximately the same bill, introduced by Jenkins in the House of Representatives and Manchin in the Senate, aimed to dismantle a 2016 law that handcuffed the Drug Enforcement Agency against Fortune 500 drug distributors handling “suspicious” orders.
Jenkins has introduced a bill, the Fentanyl and Heroin Task Force Act, to the House aiming to establish a task force to address fentanyl and heroin trafficking throughout the United States. Jenkins said in a press conference on Monday, October 23, that his work with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) pushed him to submit the bill, with the idea solidifying after his round table discussion with several federal agencies last week.
