John B. Smith, 92, of Sinks Grove, WV, left this world to be with Jesus on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, after an extended illness and stay at The Brier Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Ronceverte, WV.
John was born in Frenchburg, KY, a son of Freeland and Mary Stowe Smith on September 24, 1925.
He spent some time working as a guard at The Greenbrier hotel in White Sulphur Springs, WV, and later worked as a carpenter for many years. He was a veteran of World War II, in which he served in the United States Navy. He was a member of Sinks Grove Baptist Church.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Freeland and Mary Smith; and six brothers, Bob, Haywood, Hobart, David, Edward, and Carl.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alda Mae Waid Smith; three sons, Phillip Smith and wife, Barbara, Darrell Smith and wife, Missy, and Kevin Smith and wife, Cheryl; two daughters, Brenda Carty and husband J.D., and Lori Fitzwater and husband, Steve; 11 grandchildren, Sherry Romello, Sonya Adams, Kenny Hurt, Kevin Hurt, Casey Hurt, Darla Bell, Nicki Crouch, David Bennett, Alan Bennett, Steele Fitzwater, and Zachary Smith; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; three sisters, Pauline Bennett, Betty Church, and Nellie Brooks and husband, Robert; brother-in-law, Nelson Waid and wife, Vaida; sister-in-law, Nellie Hurley; and several nieces, nephews, and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at Groves Funeral Home with Pastor Clark Morgan of Sinks Grove Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Greenbrier Memorial Gardens in Lewisburg, WV.
Friends may call at the Groves Funeral Home, 715 Sweet Springs Valley Road, Union, WV 24983, from 6-8 PM on Friday, September 29.
Grandson and nephews will serve as pallbearers.
