FAIRLEA, WV- The Greenbrier East Spartans were able to add an extra game to the schedule so they would not have to wait 10 days between their last game with Bridgeport and the start of the Region 3, Section 2 opening game.
The Spartans got the Nicholas County Grizzlies to make the hour-and-a half trip to Spartan Yards on Friday night, May 5. The Spartans led 2-1 after three innings but scored one run apiece in innings four through six to pull away and notch their second consecutive victory, 5-1.
East used Darris Boswell, Gabe Patton and Gavin Bennett a couple innings each to make sure they are all ready to go for sectionals, and each one pitched admirably.
With the Spartans (14-16) leading 1-0 in the second frame, Bennett hit a single to left field and plated Clayton Morgan for a 2-0 advantage.
After Ian Cline scored a run in the fourth, East got in a little bit of trouble with the Grizzlies at-bat in the top of the fifth. Nicholas Co. scored a run and still had runners at second and third, but Bennett got Cole Brown to fly out, and the inning ended with East still ahead 3-1.
Henry Goodwin got the Spartans back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, and Boswell scored Cline on an RBI single in the sixth to cap the East scoring for the night.
Boswell pitched two innings, gave up just one hit and struck out one. Patton also went two innings and had two Ks. Bennett finished the last three innings, scattered four hits and had three strikeouts.
Boswell was 2-4 with two RBIs and Cline scored theee runs.
The Spartans will host Princeton this Tuesday as sectional play is set to begin.
