On May 6, the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation of Ronceverte will celebrate the 140th anniversary of the consecration of the church.
According to records of the 1870s, the Episcopal Church in Ronceverte was originally part of the Union Church which consisted of congregations of the
Baptist Church and the Presbyterian Church. As each congregation grew, each built separate churches.
On Sunday, May 6, 1883, The Rt. Rev. George Peterkin, first Bishop of the Diocese of West Virginia, consecrated the Chapel of the Incarnation. The original building was on Railroad Avenue, but in 1937 was moved to its present location on West Main Street.
Throughout its 140 years, the “little white church with the red door” has been an important part of the Ronceverte community. The congregation has been active in the food bank, made many contributions to local and national organizations and opened its doors for recovery programs, preschools and scouting groups.
The Episcopal Church of the Incarnation is an active member of the Ronceverte Ministerial Association. The church continues to have an important outreach mission. Outreach monies have been raised by the many dinners, hot dog sales and golf tournaments hosted throughout the years.
All are invited to celebrate the 140th anniversary at the Service of Holy Communion on Sunday, May 7, at 9 a.m.
