Greenbrier East receiver/kick returner Lucas McCallister was recently selected to play in the North-South Classic all-star football game in June.
The prestigious event began in 1934, but took a hiatus from 1956-1975, and has since been played consistently with the exception being the COVID-19 year of 2020. Some of the best players in the state grace the field and play competitive football with a chance to impress college coaches one last time before the next school year.
McCallister will be the Spartans’ lone representative in the game after a 2022 campaign, where he hauled in 34 passes for 420 yards and three TDs. He also had a rushing touchdown.
Just to be selected to the game is a special thing, and McCallister is excited to be picked out of a great group of players.
“It feels great,” McCallister said. “It is definitely an honor. I had always had a goal of playing in this game so to be able to accomplish that goal feels really good.”
With so many good players on the field, it can be easy to be overlooked. That is why McCallister is approaching the game as a business trip with something to prove.
“I feel like I need to prove that I deserve to be there and that I can compete among the best of them. I would also like to prove that I’m ready to play at the next level,” he said.
He also has a couple goals in mind for the contest.
“My personal goals would be to hopefully contribute to helping my team get the win and anytime I get that ball in my hand to make a big play and hopefully put some points on the board as well,” McCallister concluded.
The North-South kickoff Classic will be played at South Charleston High School on June 10 at noon.
