FAIRLEA, WV- The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans are winning in different ways. Whether great pitching, good fielding or hitting the cover off of the ball, East is getting the job done consistently.
That did not change tonight, Thursday, April 13 when the Lady Spartans defeated Wyoming East 5-4 at home. Taylor Boswell hit a solo home run in the third inning, and Jenna Groves had what turned out to be a game winning RBI single in the fifth, and the Spartans picked up their seventh consecutive victory.
East (11-2) took an early 1-0 lead in the second frame when Lindsey Black scored on a wild pitch, and Boswell’s homer made it 2-0 in the third. Two consecutive singles by Black and Olivia Plybon in that same inning kept things going, then Gracie Gumm also got a base hit that scored Black, and the Spartans led 3-0 after three.
But the Warriors (3-8) came storming back in the fourth. After East pitcher Lily Carola walked the leadoff hitter, Kayley Bane singled and a run scored on the throw back into the infield. The Warriors scored three more runs in the frame on a Spartan error, an RBI single and another error that made the score 4-3, Wyoming East at that point.
Hailey Ervin led off the bottom half of the fourth with a double to left field. She scored two batters later when her sister, Josi Ervin grounded out and the score was knotted at 4-all.
East put the game away in the fifth. Gumm laced a triple and scored when Groves singled to left field. That proved to be the game winning hit. Wyoming East threatened to tie it up in the sixth, but Haley Adkins got caught stealing second, and Josi Ervin who came on in relief of Carola, sat the Warriors down in order to end the game.
Boswell (2-4, run, RBI) Black (2-3, 2 runs) and Gumm (2-2, triple, run, RBI) led the Spartans at the plate. Groves and Josi Ervin also drove in one run each.
Carola picked up the pitching win. She went three innings, gave up hits, three runs and had five K’s.
The Spartans play again Friday, April 14 at home against Covington (VA). First pitch is scheduled for approximately 5:30 PM.
