LEWISBURG, W.Va. (WVDN) – On Saturday, April 8, there was an “egg-splosion” at the Lewisburg Elks Club golf course, as 5,000 Easter eggs were scattered across the course for area egg hunters.
Don Aultz, exalted ruler of the Lewisburg Elk Lodge teamed up with Willie Hylton, the vice president of South West Virginia Elks, to hold an Easter egg hunt for the children of the area.
Five thousand eggs were stuffed with candy or money and sprinkled about a foot apart across the entire fairway from Route 219 to the Elks’ clubhouse.
The kids were ready.
“It took an hour and a half for a crew to scatter the eggs, and the children completed their collection of them in 15 to 20 minutes,” said Hylton.
The 140 attendees included parents with about 70 children. The area was split for age consideration, and the 1-to-4 year-olds were conveniently allowed to collect at the practice putting green near the clubhouse.
The rest of the pack raced across hill and dale and found eggs hidden in the rough on both sides, as well as down the center of the fairway. The sight of the thousands of eggs looked like a Willie Wonka movie.
A 7-foot-tall Easter bunny was there for kids to greet and to take photos. A generous little boy gave one of his found eggs to the giant bunny and was rewarded with a special, polka-dotted one (probably containing a special prize inside).
Hylton was thrilled with the turnout.
“We have had larger numbers attend in past years, but today was a bit chilly. The eggs had candy inside, as well as $1 bills, $1 coins and 50 cent pieces,” he said.
